Can I leave clothes in my dresser when I move?

This is a common question for anyone prior to packing. Follow these best do's and dont's before making the decision:

DO:

  • Leave clothes in the drawers if the dresser is light enough to move

  • Leave clothes in the drawers and use them as makeshift moving boxes

  • Secure the drawers shut with or without clothing inside

  • Leave clothes in the drawers if it is a solid and sturdy dresser

  • Ensure the dresser is going to be kept upright throughout the entire process if you leave items inside. Some moves can be tricky, if you know the dresser will need to be flipped to move through a door then the drawers will need to be emptied

DON'T:

  • Don't leave clothes if the dresser has to be carried up a flight of stairs

  • Don't leave clothes if you know the dresser drawers are loose and fragile

  • Don't leave clothes in the dresser if it is a ready to assemble item

  • Don't leave clothes in the dresser if it is an antique. This will put your furniture at greater risk

  • Don't leave items in drawers if they can easily shift. Items such as cosmetics and office supplies are best to be secured in a box instead of moving around in a drawer
